MLB Power Rankings

Yu Darvish
It's only May 8th and my head hurts from all of these questionable managerial and front office decisions. Even the best teams in baseball have made me wonder who handed the keys of the depth chart to that guy.

Now, I know it is a difficult job and it's easy to second guess from my couch, but I think I am allowed to call out whoever I want.

So a month into the season here are my Power Rankings and the things that are making me think I need to hand my resume to somebody in baseball operations. I can do a better job than this.

1. Rangers - No more Cliff Lee, no more C.J. Wilson, so is Yu Darvish really the rookie you will call on in game one of a postseason series? Texas is talented, but needs to figure a few things out. Whose the ace of the staff and what are they doing with Josh Hamilton. I know Hamilton comes with some risk, but they better sign him before he wins MVP and walks.

2. Rays

3. Cardinals - I give props on the decision to sign Carlos Beltran and Lance Berkman a year prior because it has saved their offense, but I have my questions about their starting rotation. The magic man Dave Duncan is gone and while Wainwright may be the one struggling right now, he's the least of my worries. They are crazy if they think they can roll with Lance Lynn all season. If Chris Carpenter cannot regain his form, the Cards could be the team going in the wrong direction in September.

4. Dodgers

5. Nationals - The amount of mixed messages make me want to scream. They are a contender this season, yet their ace Stephen Strasburg has a 160 innings limit? Make up your mind. The starters have been great, but I still doubt the youngsters ability to handle the pressure of the race in the heat of summer. They are still a year or two away.

Freddie Freeman
6. Braves

7. Yankees - Somebody didn't do their homework. Michael Pineda came to Spring Training overweight and injured while their top former prospect Jesus Montero sips Starbucks in the Northwest. Since March Joe Girardi has named seven different fifth starters. At least Derek Jeter can still hit.

8. Tigers

9.Reds - You can only get so much from value from a set-up man and right now that's all they are using the electric talents of Aroldis Chapman for. While they have a lefty-specialist closing and two struggling starters in the rotation Chapman has been lights out for one middle inning. It's time to move him to ninth or my opinion, a starter. This team could take off.

10. Brewers

11. Phillies - No more free passes for Chase Utley. You're telling me he was fine all offseason and the second he got to Clearwater he decided he won't be ready until June? Utley left the Phils in a bad spot and the offense has no idea how to play small ball. It's a waste of the three aces (Halladay, Lee, and Hamels) talents.

Matt Wieters
12. Orioles

13. Blue Jays

14. Giants - I think Bochy is one of the best managers in baseball, but he's off to a rough start this season. There are way to many players on this roster with undefined roles or jobs they cannot handle. Brandon Crawford is not the answer at shortstop, Brandon Belt does not know if he's an everyday player or on his way back to Triple A. And who knows why Tim Lincecum cannot throw strikes. At least Matt Cain has taken his game to the next level.

15. Indians

16. Diamondbacks

17. Angels - First and foremost, they have too many players that expect to play everyday. The Halos just thought with Albert Pujols hitting third in L.A. they sun would shine with rainbows every day. But Pujols has seen the pressure, Mark Trumbo does not have a position and Vernon Wells is still collecting a giant paycheck for his piss-poor performance.

18. Red Sox

Heath Bell
19. Marlins

20. White Sox - A mere two years ago the White Sox drafted Chris Sale in the first round TO BE A STARTER. Sale entered 2012 TO BE A STARTER. After five starts all of the sudden decided it's not going to work. GM Kenny Williams and rookie manager Robin Ventura make me want to hit something with the way they handled this young and talented lefty. Give a chance to start. That's why you drafted him.

21. Mets

22. Rockies

23. Royals - Everybody wanted to talk about all the great hitters coming to Kansas City this season. And while they were not over hyping Eric Hosmer and Mike Moustaskas, they completely forgot pitching wins. And in their five man rotation they are lucky to say they have 1 1/2 big league starters. Another long year in KC.

24. Astros

25. Pirates

26. Athletics - I actually thought Billy Beane was smart and then I saw Moneyball. He has not won a thing and he should not be praised for making the playoffs. True, it's difficult to compete with their budget, but lets applaud his out-of-the-box thinking and not he on-the-field results. Some old story this year. They aren't winning anything anytime soon.

27. Cubs

28. Mariners

29. Padres

30. Twins - I really wanted to give Ron Gardenhire and Joe Mauer the benefit of the doubt, but after a dismal display this April I have to say the best days for the Twin City got blown up with the Metrodome. No player likes to play at Target Field and Fransisco Liriano and Justin Morneau's injuries and ineffectiveness sum up the last 15 months. Bert Blyleven will have to circle bagged heads for a few more months.

2012 NFL Mock Draft

Follow me on Twitter @amarcus515

1. IND - Andrew Luck (QB) Stanford - We have known for a long time and two days prior to Roger Goodell's announcement Indy has made it official. They are saying he is the best college quarterback since John Elway, who they drafted and traded. They are going to stick with Luck and put him right onto the field.
2. WAS - Robert Griffin III (QB) Baylor
3. MIN - Matt Kalil (OT) USC
4. CLE - Justin Blackmon (WR) Oklahoma State - A lot of prognosticators say they will go Trent Richardson or trade out of the four spot. I cannot mock a trade and I think wide receiver is a bigger issue. If they give Colt McCoy a target like Blackmon there will be no excuses.
5. TB - Morris Claiborne (CB) LSU
6. STL - Fletcher Cox (DT) Mississippi State
7. JAC - Trent Richardson (RB) Alabama - This may feel late for the supposed sure-fire top 5 pick, but I think he falls in the lap of Jacksonville and they cannot pass him up. Richardson should help keep Maurice Jones-Drew healthy and become a dynamic tandem to take pressure off Blaine Gabbert.
8. MIA - Ryan Tannehill (QB) Texas A& M
9. CAR - Melvin Ingram (OLB) South Carolina
10. BUF - Riley Reiff (OT) Iowa
11. KC - Quinton Coples (DE) North Carolina
12. SEA - Luke Kuechly (ILB) Boston College
13. ARI - David DeCastro (OG) Stanford
14. DAL - Mark Barron (S) Alabama - This just has the feel of a Jerry Jones' pick. Barron would be an immediate upgrade to suspect Dallas secondary. The number of Crimson Tide in the first round is incredible and he may be the best one of them all.
15. PHI - Stephon Gilmore (CB) South Carolina - The Eagles may go Brockers here, but I think they use their new "best available" stratgery and take Gilmore, who some believe to be a top 10 pick. It make trading Asante Samuel a forgone conclusion and could be a guy moved on draft day to move up in the draft.
16. NYJ - Michael Floyd (WR) Notre Dame
17. CIN - Michael Brockers (DT) LSU
18. SD - Whitney Mercilus (OLB) Illinois
19. CHI - Cordy Glenn (OT) Georgia - They can get trade for Brandon Marshall, but if Jay Cutler cannot stay upright and on the field it just won't matter. Cutler was sacked 105 times in the last two seasons and Glenn will most likely be the best available lineman on the board at 19th overall.
20. TEN - Dre Kirkpatrick (CB) Alabama
21. CIN - Courtney Upshaw (DE) Alabama
22. CLE - Shea McClellin (OLB) Boise State
23. DET - Kevin Zeitler (OG) Wisconsin
24. PIT - Nick Perry (DE) USC - It just feels like whoever's name called in the spot will be a pro-bowler. The Steelers have been so successful in the draft. With their defense clearly aging I believe they go get a guy who could play outside linebacker or defensive end in their 3-4 scheme.
25. DEN - Dontari Poe (DT) Memphis
26. HOU - Jonathan Martin (OT) Stanford
27. NE - Chandler Jones (DE) Syracuse
28. GB - Andre Branch (DE) Clemson
29. BAL - Dont'a Hightower (ILB) Alabama
30. SF - Kendall Wright (WR) Baylor
31. NE - Devon Still (DT) Penn State
32. NYG - Coby Fleener (TE) Stanford - The luxury of being the defending champs, they really do no see many glaring holes, but as a luxury pick they could grab Fleener. Andrew Luck's favorite target at Stanford could be a nice safety valve for Eli Manning and a immediate upgrade over Jake Ballard.

Philadelphia Eagles (Rounds 2-7)
2nd Round - Brandon Thompson (DT) Clemson - It is clear the Eagles defense needs to get better and the focus in this draft will be on that side of the ball. Thompson is considered a classroom and weight room fanatic, which coach Reid loves. They reports say he is NFL ready, but upside is small. He could challenge for a starting role right away and would definitely be in their rotation.
2nd Round - Bobby Wagner (OLB) Utah State
3rd Round - Brock Osweiler (QB) Arizona State - Time is running out on the Vick experience and with no real projected back-up with starting ability on the roster the Eagles may grab Osweiler. The 6-foot-7 junior is said to have a high ceiling, but needs to time to learn. No better place to go than Philly with QB guru Reid.
4th Round - Brandon Hardin (FS) Oregon State
5th Round - Marvin McNutt (WR) Iowa
6th Round - Matt Reynolds (OT) BYU
6th Round - Terrance Ganaway (RB) Baylor - The nephew of former Eagle Jeremiah Trotter could become a nice change of pace back to LeSean McCoy. Ganaway is thick and runs north and south. He could become that goal line back the Eagles have not had in years.
6th Round - Oliver Vernon (DE) Miami

Countdown to Opening Day 2012: #1 Philadelphia Phillies

To help pass the time between now and the start of the 2012 Major League Baseball season I am going to be examining a different team every day. Starting with the Astros, working toward the Phillies. I will give you my projected starters, breakout and bust players, each team's X-Factor and top prospect.

PROJECTED LINEUP

SS Jimmy Rollins
3B Placido Polanco
CF Shane Victorino
RF Hunter Pence
1B Ty Wiggington
LF John Mayberry Jr.
C Carlos Ruiz
2B Freddy Galvis
P Roy Halladay
**Chase Utley (out indefinitely)
**Ryan Howard (out indefinitely)

PROJECTED ROTATION
Roy Halladay
Cliff Lee
Cole Hamels
Vance Worley
Joe Blanton

PROJECTED BULLPEN
Closer - Jonathan Papelbon

Set-up - Antonio Bastardo

Top Prospect - Trevor May (RHP)

Breakout
Dominic Brown - The high expectations did not help Brown in Philadelphia after getting off to a slow start in his major league career. Philadelphia is already to write him off, but I am not. Sure he needs to improve, but that's why he is in Triple-A to start the season. I expect him to get off to hot start and make his way back to the city of Brotherly Love by mid-May. He will be no worse than Raul Ibanez's 2011 numbers (.245 20 HR 83 RBIs) and has the chance to be a lot better. He's only 24 years old.

Bust
Vance Worley- Much like they write off struggling youngsters people also like to get attached to a player off to a hot start. It happen with Kyle Kendrick winning 10 games in his rookie season, Jay Happ almost being held onto when the right move was flipping him for Roy Oswalt, and now Vance Worley. The Vanimal is most likely better than Kendrick and Happ, but don't even consider him a part of the terrific trio. Worley is a solid fifth starter but nothing more. If you set your expectations for the righty too high you will surely disappointed.

X-FACTOR
Chase Utley - There was not much offense to speak of in 2011 and they still won 102 games, but this year they are starting out the season with no Ryan Howard or Chase Utley in the middle of the order. With Howard most expect him to come back in a month or two and be the player that is capable of carrying a team. For Utley, Scoobey Doo couldn't solve this mystery. Utley has worn down so much so quickly that he has not idea what his body is capable of anymore. Phillies should hope for the best, but expect the worst. At this point anything is better than nothing at all.

LAST YEAR'S RECORD: 102-60

Phillies pitching got even stronger with the addition of Jonathan Papelbon

PROJECTED FINISH: 2nd in the National League East

Countdown to Opening Day 2012: #2 Cincinnati Reds

To help pass the time between now and the start of the 2012 Major League Baseball season I am going to be examining a different team every day. Starting with the Astros, working toward the Phillies. I will give you my projected starters, breakout and bust players, each team's X-Factor and top prospect.

PROJECTED LINEUP

2B Brandon Phillips
SS Zack Cozart
1B Joey Votto
3B Scott Rolen
RF Jay Bruce
CF Drew Stubbs
LF Chris Heisey
C Ryan Hanigan
P Johnny Cueto

PROJECTED ROTATION
Johnny Cueto
Mat Latos
Bronson Arroyo
Mike Leake
Homer Bailey

PROJECTED BULLPEN
Closer - Sean Marshall

Set-up - Nick Masset
**Ryan Madson (out for the season)

Top Prospect - Devin Mesoraco (C)

Breakout
Jay Bruce - He has increased his home run total in every season yet we still have not seen the best of Bruce. The biggest stat to jump off the page is the increase in walks from 33 in his rookie season to 71 a year ago. That should help the average approach .290 and with 35 homers and 110 RBIs he could be in the MVP conversation in 2012.

Bust
Scott Rolen - I guess when you are trying to win now you want to play the proven player, but in the Reds case I think they have hurt some youngsters by sticking with Rolen at the hot corner. I thought Juan Francisco had a chance to be an impact hitter, but he never got the chance and is still expected to come off the bench. Rolen is a day-to-day player all season battling injuries and only time will tell is he can be a run producer in his 17th major league season.

X-FACTOR
Sean Marshall - The news that closer Ryan Madson needs Tommy John Surgery really sent shock waves through Cincy. Not only did it mean Marshall, who has seven career saves will be the closer, it also meant everyone's role slightly alters. Mid-relievers are now seventh and eighth inning guys and so on. Aroldis Chapman was being molded to start, but with the news that Madson is out could shift those plans. It is Marshall's job to lose now.

LAST YEAR'S RECORD: 79-83

How will Mat Latos handle the move east?

PROJECTED FINISH: 1st in the National League Central

PROJECTED LINEUP

SS Erick Aybar
2B Howie Kendrick
1B Albert Pujols
DH Kendrys Morales
RF Torii Hunter
LF Vernon Wells
C Chris Iannetta
3B Alberto Callaspo
CF Peter Bourjos

PROJECTED ROTATION
Jered Weaver
Dan Haren
C.J. Wilson
Ervin Santana
Garrett Richards

PROJECTED BULLPEN
Closer - Jordan Walden
Set-up - Scott Downs

Top Prospect - Mike Trout (OF)

Breakout
Howie Kendrick - With the signing of Albert Pujols and the imminent return on Kendrys Morales the Angels just added two 100 RBI guys to their lineup and no one will benefit more than the two-hole hitter and second basemen. Kendrick should reach base enough this year to score 115 runs and he could even get into the long ball act and hit 20 dingers this season.

Bust
Vernon Wells - Luckily the Angels have a handful of players fighting for playing time because it is only a matter of time until Wells sees the number of his at-bats shrink. With five major league outfielders in the organization Wells does have time to slump. His giant contract is not going to save his this year. They will have to put his wallet on the bench.

X-FACTOR
Jordan Walden - The 10 blown saves he committed in 2011 is not going to cut it this season. Goals are way to high to let back end of the bullpen hold them back. He still has the potential to be elite and the Angels need him to be. Or else they will be buying a ninth inning guy at the trade deadline.

LAST YEAR'S RECORD: 86-76

Albert Pujols heads west

PROJECTED FINISH: 1st in the American League West
